Overview

A private full day: the Royal Mummies Hall at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Saladin's Citadel and a late afternoon in the Khan El Khalili bazaar.

Your private car and guide collect you from your hotel and drive to Fustat, the first Arab capital of Egypt, where the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization now stands. Your guide leads you through the main gallery, which follows Egypt from its first farmers to the modern day.

Downstairs, the Royal Mummies Hall holds the preserved bodies of around twenty kings and queens, including Ramses II and Hatshepsut, each in its own softly lit case. It is quiet, a little eerie and surprisingly personal. Then you head up to the Citadel of Saladin, where the domes of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali crown the hill and the city spreads out below.

The day ends in Khan El Khalili, the great bazaar of Islamic Cairo. Haggle for lanterns, spices or silver, or rest over tea in a café as the lanes fill up in the late afternoon. The tour takes about eight hours, ending back at your hotel.
