Overview
Two half-day tours of Alexandria with a private Egyptologist: the Bibliotheca, the jewellery museum and Montazah, then the catacombs, Pompey's Pillar, the amphitheatre and Qaitbay.
Alexandria has a different rhythm from Cairo: sea air, a long corniche and layers of Greek, Roman and Islamic history. Splitting the sights over two half-days means you see the essentials without rushing and still have time to walk the seafront on your own.
You leave Cairo in the morning with your private Egyptologist guide. The first afternoon covers the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern library built near the site of the ancient one, the Royal Jewellery Museum in its former palace, and the gardens of Montazah on the eastern edge of the city. The night is in an Alexandria hotel with breakfast.
Next morning is given over to the ancient city: the catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, carved deep into the rock, Pompey's Pillar, the Roman amphitheatre of Kom el-Dikka and the Citadel of Qaitbay, standing where the Pharos lighthouse once did. Then you drive back to Cairo.
