Overview
A trip from Dahab to St Catherine to climb Mount Sinai, with the option of a sunrise ascent, and to visit the sixth-century monastery at its foot.
Mount Sinai rises about 2,285 metres above the desert, and for Jews, Christians and Muslims alike it is where Moses received the Ten Commandments. We collect you from your hotel in Dahab and drive about two hours inland through the mountains to the village of St Catherine.
The climb follows the broad Camel Path and then the final steep steps to the summit, where a small chapel and a mosque stand side by side. Many people choose to go up in the dark to watch the sun rise over the peaks; it is a steady walk rather than a scramble, and your guide sets the pace.
At the foot of the mountain, St Catherine's Monastery has been home to Greek Orthodox monks since the sixth century, one of the oldest working monasteries in the world, and tradition places the Burning Bush in its grounds. The tour takes about seven hours; note that the monastery is closed on Fridays, Sundays and religious holidays.
