Overview
A day north of Aswan with an Egyptologist: the double temple of Kom Ombo above the Nile and the Temple of Horus at Edfu, one of the most complete temples in Egypt.
Most people see Kom Ombo and Edfu in a hurry from a Nile cruise. By road from Aswan you can take them at your own pace. We collect you from your hotel in the morning and drive north along the river for about an hour to Kom Ombo.
Kom Ombo is unusual: a double temple, perfectly symmetrical, with one half dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and the other to Haroeris, Horus the Elder. Your guide points out the reliefs of what look like surgical instruments and the temple calendar, and next door a small museum displays mummified crocodiles found nearby.
Another hour or so north brings you to Edfu and the Temple of Horus, the falcon-headed god: huge, roofed and remarkably complete, with towering pylons and dark inner sanctuaries that give a real sense of how an Egyptian temple felt inside. You drive back to Aswan in the afternoon, around ten hours after pickup.
