Overview

A five-hour guided outing to the relocated Kalabsha Temple on the shore of Lake Nasser and Aswan's Nubian Museum, with entry fees included.

Kalabsha is one of Aswan's quieter treasures. Built in Roman times for the Nubian god Mandulis, the temple was cut into blocks and moved in the 1960s to save it from the rising waters behind the High Dam. It now stands on a promontory beside Lake Nasser, reached by a short boat ride.

Your guide walks you through its courtyards and pillared hall, where carved reliefs of pharaohs and gods are still crisp, and points out the smaller monuments rebuilt alongside it. With far fewer visitors than Philae, you can often stand in the sanctuary with only the sound of the water outside.

Back in town, the Nubian Museum fills in the human story: statues, jewellery, everyday objects and a full-size village scene tracing Nubia from prehistory to the villages lost beneath the lake. Its garden is a pleasant, shady place to finish before the drive back to your hotel.
