Overview

A long day from Cairo to El Alamein on the Mediterranean coast, visiting the Commonwealth War Cemetery and the War Museum, with lunch included.

In 1942, the battles fought around a small railway halt called El Alamein changed the course of the Second World War in North Africa. We pick you up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza early in the morning for a drive of around three to three and a half hours north-west towards the Mediterranean, with your driver-guide filling in the background on the way.

The first stop is the Commonwealth War Cemetery, where more than 7,000 graves lie in neat rows of pale stone, many of them marked simply 'known unto God'. It's a quiet, reflective place, and the names and ages on the headstones bring the history very close.

At the El Alamein War Museum, tanks, guns and vehicles stand outside while the galleries tell the story of the campaign from all sides through maps, uniforms and personal belongings. After lunch you head back to Cairo, arriving at your hotel about twelve hours after pickup.
