Overview

A full day from Marsa Alam across the desert to the Nile, visiting the Temple of Horus at Edfu and the double temple of Kom Ombo, with lunch included.

The road west from Marsa Alam crosses the Eastern Desert and reaches the Nile at Edfu, about three hours' drive away. It means an early start, but it brings two of the finest Ptolemaic temples in Egypt within reach of a Red Sea holiday.

The Temple of Horus at Edfu is the best preserved in the country, with its towering pylon, roofed halls and granite falcon statues still in place. After lunch you drive south along the river to Kom Ombo, a rare double temple shared by the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-headed Haroeris; next door, a small museum displays mummified crocodiles.

Your guide makes sense of the carvings and the gods behind them, and then you head back across the desert. Plan on a long day: the touring takes about eight hours, with around three hours' driving each way on top.
