Overview

A private day at two of Cairo's great museums: the pharaonic collection of the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and the Royal Mummies Hall at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

Two museums in one day sounds like a lot, but these two complement each other well. Your private car and guide collect you from your hotel and start at the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, the grand old building that has held the nation's antiquities since 1902, its halls filled with colossal statues, painted coffins and jewellery.

Tutankhamun's treasures have moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, but the Egyptian Museum still holds tens of thousands of pieces, and your guide focuses on the ones with the best stories. Afterwards you drive south to Fustat for the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, whose main gallery traces Egypt's history from prehistoric times to the present.

Below it lies the Royal Mummies Hall, where kings and queens such as Ramses II and Hatshepsut rest in quiet, softly lit rooms. It is a fitting end to the day. The tour takes about seven hours, ending at your hotel.
