Overview
A private morning at Birqash, Egypt's largest camel market on the desert edge north-west of Cairo, watching traders, herders and hundreds of camels at work.
Every week, camels brought up from Sudan and southern Egypt change hands at Birqash, on the desert edge north-west of Cairo. It's loud, dusty and entirely genuine: a working market, not a show for visitors.
We pick you up from your hotel and drive out of the city. At the market your representative helps you make sense of the scene: traders sealing deals with a slap of hands, herders with sticks keeping the animals in line and buyers checking teeth and legs before they part with their money.
Keep your distance from moving herds and follow your representative's lead, because camels have right of way here. Mornings are best, when trading is busiest, and the tour takes about four hours.
