Overview

A ten-hour stopover tour from Cairo airport covering the Giza pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel of Saladin and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

A long stopover is enough to see Cairo properly, from the pyramids to the medieval city. Your guide meets you at the airport once you've cleared passport control, and the first stop is the Giza plateau, where the Great Pyramid, its two neighbours and the Sphinx stand at the edge of the desert.

Next comes the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, whose crowded galleries hold statues, coffins and everyday objects from three thousand years of history; Tutankhamun's treasures have moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, but there is still far more here than one visit can take in. From there you drive up to the 12th-century Citadel of Saladin to see the domes of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and a view over the rooftops of the old city.

The day ends among the lanes of Khan el-Khalili, a bazaar since the Middle Ages, with time to browse lanterns, spices and silver or sit over a mint tea. Then it's back to the airport, about ten hours after pickup.

Meet your guide at Cairo airport and drive to the Giza plateau for the pyramids and the Sphinx. Continue to the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, then up to the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Finish with time in Khan el-Khalili before the transfer back to the airport, about ten hours after pickup.
