Overview
A private full day among Cairo's places of worship: the mosques of Sultan Hassan and Al-Azhar, the churches of Old Cairo, Ben Ezra Synagogue and the lanes of Khan El Khalili.
Cairo is called the city of a thousand minarets, but its churches and synagogue are just as much part of its story. Your private car and guide collect you from your hotel and start in Islamic Cairo at the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, a fourteenth-century Mamluk building whose towering walls and vast open courtyard dwarf everyone who enters.
From there you continue to Old Cairo, where Coptic churches stand within the walls of the old Roman fortress, alongside the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Your guide explains how Christians, Jews and Muslims have shared these streets for well over a thousand years.
Later you return to the medieval heart of the city for Al-Azhar Mosque, founded in 970 and still one of the oldest working centres of learning in the world, then cross into Khan El Khalili for a stroll among the lantern and spice stalls. The tour takes about eight hours.
