Overview
A private full day: the Royal Mummies Hall at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Saladin's Citadel and the churches and synagogue of Old Cairo, with car and guide.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, in Fustat on the edge of Old Cairo, tells Egypt's story from prehistory to the present day. Your private car and guide collect you from your hotel and start here, with your guide picking out the most telling objects in the main gallery before you head down to the Royal Mummies Hall.
In a hushed, softly lit gallery lie some of Egypt's greatest rulers, among them Ramses II and Hatshepsut, brought here in a grand procession through Cairo in 2021. Seeing their faces up close is a strange and moving moment. Afterwards you drive up to Saladin's Citadel, with the domed Mosque of Muhammad Ali and wide views over the city.
The day finishes in Old Cairo, where churches, a synagogue and the remains of a Roman fortress share a few quiet streets. Your guide explains how Christians, Jews and Muslims have lived side by side here for well over a thousand years. The tour takes about eight hours.
