Overview
Four hours in historic Cairo with a licensed guide: the mosques and mausoleums of El Moez Street, the gate of Bab Zuweila and the gardens of Al-Azhar Park, with lunch.
We collect you from your hotel and drive into the old Fatimid heart of Cairo, where El Moez Street runs between the medieval city gates. Your licensed guide walks you through one of the richest stretches of Islamic architecture anywhere: carved stone facades, wooden mashrabiya screens, domes and minarets raised by Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman rulers.
Along the way you step inside mosques and mausoleums and finish the walk at Bab Zuweila, the great 11th-century gate at the southern end of the street. This is a living neighbourhood rather than a museum: shopkeepers, handcarts and schoolchildren share the street with the monuments.
A short drive brings you to Al-Azhar Park, laid out on what was once a centuries-old rubbish mound and now one of the greenest corners of Cairo. Lunch is included, and from the park's paths you look back over the domes and minarets you have just walked among. You are back at your hotel about four hours after pickup.
