Overview
A long day from Aswan to Luxor and back with an Egyptologist: the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple on the West Bank, lunch, then Karnak Temple on the East Bank.
Staying in Aswan but keen to see Luxor? It's a long day, but it can be done. We pick you up very early and drive north for around three and a half hours, following the Nile past sugarcane fields and market towns while you catch up on sleep.
Your Egyptologist guide starts on the West Bank, with three tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut beneath the cliffs and a stop at the Colossi of Memnon. After lunch in a local restaurant you cross to the East Bank for Karnak Temple, with its vast Hypostyle Hall and Hatshepsut's obelisk.
In the late afternoon you head back south to Aswan, arriving about 12 hours after you set off. It's a full day, but it fits the essentials of ancient Thebes into a stay in Aswan.
Highlights
- Three royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings
