Overview
Skip the 3.5-hour road journey each way: fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel, tour both temples with a guide, have lunch and be back in about five hours.
By road, Abu Simbel is about three and a half hours south of Aswan each way. The short domestic flight turns it into a half-day trip, leaving you more energy for the temples themselves and the rest of the day free.
From the small airport it's a few minutes' drive to the site. Your guide leads you to the four seated colossi of Ramses II at the Great Temple and into its pillared halls, then to the smaller temple dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Along the way you'll hear how both temples were cut into blocks and lifted to higher ground in the 1960s to escape the waters of Lake Nasser.
After the visit there's lunch before the transfer back to the airport and the return flight to Aswan, where a driver takes you back to your hotel.
