Desert days are hot but nights can be freezing. Here's our guides' packing list for a comfortable night in the White Desert.
The golden rule: layers
The desert is a place of extremes. In winter, afternoon temperatures around 25°C can fall below 5°C at night. In summer, nights are pleasant but days are scorching. Pack thin layers you can add and remove.
Our guides' checklist
- A warm fleece or down jacket — even in spring.
- Long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt for sun protection.
- A hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
- Closed shoes — sand gets hot and some formations have sharp edges.
- A headlamp, ideally with a red-light mode for stargazing.
- A power bank — there's no electricity at camp, and batteries drain faster in the cold.
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser.
- A copy of your passport for checkpoints.
What we provide
You don't need to bring camping gear: tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, blankets, all meals and drinking water are included in our trips.
For photographers
Bring a tripod for star photos, a wide-angle lens for the formations and a blower to keep sand off your sensor. Change lenses inside the vehicle when it's windy.
